The Friday Five, 11/15/24: 5 things I've been up to this week

This month is flying by, I can't believe it's already mid-November and Thanksgiving is in two weeks. We got back from Louisville on Tuesday, so it was a shorter week for me, but I'm glad it's Friday, even though I have an infusion tomorrow morning.

What I've been up to this week:
  1. Traveling to Louisville, KY. I had only been to Louisville one other time, in 2019, for work, and it was a one-night trip, so this trip really gave me the chance to explore a bit more, even though, oddly enough, we didn't go downtown. We were able to do three distillery tours and also had a lot of really good meals.
  2. Distillery tours. On Saturday, we started these off at Peerless, which was a short drive from our Airbnb, maybe about 15 minutes (it's close to downtown). Of our three tours, my friends and husband agreed that Peerless had the best bourbon, since it's more of a small-batch operation and still relatively new. On Sunday, we drove about an hour to Maker's Mark, which had a really cute campus and some unique experiences—for example, if you buy a bottle of Maker's in the gift shop, you get to hand-dip the top of it, since the top of every bottle of Maker's IS hand-dipped, and so my husband and I bought a bottle and I got to dip it.
On Monday, we had our final tour, at Buffalo Trace, which was also an interesting, more industrial campus. At every tour, we had a tasting, and I think BT's was my favorite, because they had a Bourbon Cream drink (sweeter and much more my style) and also a root beer.
  3. Having some good food and drinks. My favorite meal of the trip was probably at North of Bourbon, where I had steak frites, but there were some close runner-ups too. We also went to a few bars, one of which was called Pretty Decent (yes, that's it's name, lol) which was primarily a mezcal bar, but had other drinks too. Pretty Decent was unique in that it was more of a shop than a bar: it's a botany (plant) shop in the front, and a cocktail bar in the back, and we actually went twice this trip.
  4. Staying in an Airbnb. Our Airbnb was on a street that was a LITTLE sketchy, but the actual Airbnb was super nice; I'd be willing to wager that it was the most "curated" Airbnb I've ever stayed at, and by that I mean it was completely renovated, it had a massive kitchen/living room/hangout area (including a pool table), and it had really nice touches like Whole Foods soap/body wash, cute throw pillows, cute decor (like the Loo-vul sign you see above), etc. This is the link if anyone is traveling to Louisville and would like to check it out.
  5. Stopping in Cincinnati both ways. We drove to Louisville, which, if you drive it nonstop from Metro Detroit, is about 5.5 to 6 hours, but we stopped in Cincinnati both ways, so it was more like 4 hours plus a stop, then 2 hours (going) and vice versa on the way back. On the way there, we stopped to visit some friends (my husband's Best Man from the wedding and his wife, whom actually was one of the May weddings we attended), and had dinner with them, and on the way back, we stopped at Jungle Jim's—always a must when in Cincy—and spent a bit too much on wine, cheeses, and some other things (for example, they have pickle barrels and you can buy individual pickles; it's become a tradition for me to snag a $1.29 ginormous garlic pickle to snack on for the drive home). We spent about 1h15m to 1h30m there and STILL didn't even get to hit up most of the grocery sections, but alas, we were on a tighter time frame to get home, since we were both working the next day. They also have a fabulous international section, with interesting snacks and candy, which we had been to before but not this time.
