The Friday Five, 10/25/24: 5 things I've been up to this week

This week has been an odd one but went by fast, and tomorrow we are going to Houston for a few days to visit friends and attend the Texas Renaissance Festival (our 3rd year going together) which is always a fun time.

What I've been up to this week:

  1. MJ the Musical, at the Fisher Theatre, Detroit. On Wednesday night, my mom and I attended this, and I was blown away by how good the dancing was—the actor who plays Michael Jackson in it is SUPER talented. It's playing at the Fisher through November 3rd, and I highly recommend seeing it; you can read more info about it here at my initial blog post.
  2. Seeing movies. I officially canceled my AMC A-List subscription after seeing Goodrich at the Forum last Friday night, which pained me to do, but I'm now at my "new place" (husband's house) full-time and the closest AMC is AMC Livonia, which is old and does not have recliners. I decided to try out the new MoviePass, and so far it's been a trip—I had the old one, circa 2018 or 2019 I believe, which was fabulous ($10/month for unlimited movies, and obviously that wasn't sustainable!). For this one, I signed up for the standard plan, which gives you 72 credits per month, and movies cost a different amount of credits; for example, I saw We Live in Time, at Emagine Novi, on Monday night, and that cost me 23 credits plus 5 credits for the online service fee, as they give you a digital card to use; you can ask for a physical card, like ye olden days, but I've found I like being able to purchase tickets a few hours ahead of time.
As for the movies I saw this week, I'd give both of them (Goodrich and We Live in Time) a high 4.5/5 stars, as I really enjoyed both. The non-linear structure of We Live in Time (ironic, given the title!) drove me a little nuts, though, but the acting by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh was phenomenal. I also rewatched Challengers yesterday, since it's FINALLY on streaming (on Prime)—it was my favorite movie of the year at the time I watched it, in April, and I gave it 5/5 stars. I stand by that rating after watching it, although it might be more like a 4.5; regardless, I highly recommend it, and it's free to stream if you have Prime.
  3. Getting takeout. On Friday night, I treated myself to Doordash from Pho-shi, in Troy, since I was in Clawson that day. For Saturday lunch, my husband and I were at my condo so we got Noori takeout (Korean fried chicken, the best). On Sunday night, my parents and I got Hungry Howie's, and on Tuesday night, I was again in Clawson for some errands so I got us Pink Garlic takeout from Oak Park. On Wednesday, my mom and I wanted something quick and easy before the show at the Fisher, so we went to Pita Way in Novi, which was pretty good—I used to frequent the Troy one but hadn't been in a bit. They usually do coupons, and we had a BOGO coupon for sandwiches ("sandweeches," they call them, on their menu), although their normal coupons are buy one get one half-off.
  4. Moving stuff out of my condo. I stayed at my condo for a sort of "last hurrah" last week, Wednesday night through Saturday afternoon, and on Saturday, my husband came over and we moved my work desk and a few other essentials. I still have a few small things there (a few dishes, etc.) but I'm hoping to list it for sale sometime soon.
  5. Watching TV shows. I started Tell Me Lies, on Hulu, after seeing multiple friends post about it, and so far it's pretty good; I guess season 1 came out in 2022, and season 2 just dropped this month. I've been continuing to watch The Penguin (Max), The Franchise (also Max; so-so for me so far, but great cast), Shrinking (AppleTV), High Potential (ABC/Hulu), Married at First Sight (Lifetime), Agatha All Along (Disney+), Abbott Elementary (ABC/Hulu, one of my faves), and Love is Blind (Netflix), although LIB basically wrapped up this week, not including the reunion next week. My Friday shows are Matlock, Elsbeth, and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, so I have those to watch today, too.
