The Friday Five, 1/1/21: 5 things I've been up to this week

Happy New Year! The only thing I'm asking of 2021 is that it is better than 2020, and considering 2020 was a dumpster fire of a year, I really don't think that's asking too much.

What I've been up to this week:
  1. Doing some grocery shopping. I've been trying to keep busy since I'm off work this week, so I've been doing things I haven't done in a while or have wanted to do. Example: On Monday, I went to Kung Fu Tea to get bubble tea (not technically groceries, I know), and I actually went IN to Target to do some returns; I also went into Kroger since I had a gift card to use. On Tuesday, I went to Srodek's in Sterling Heights (on Mound Rd.) to buy some pierogies. I bought the two pictured above, which FYI come frozen, as well as some kolaczki (really delicious raspberry cookies/pastries) and some other things. On Wednesday, I went to Whole Foods for an Amazon return, but I also had some coupons for vegan hot dogs that they have there, so that was interesting ... there was also a line to get in, which surprised me.
  2. Getting takeout. Last Saturday, my parents came here to watch Wonder Woman '84 with me on my new TV, and we got Pita Way takeout ... the last of the $100 Pita Way gravy train! On Sunday, I saw some friends (with masks on) and we got Guernsey takeout; their fried chicken was decent, although The Southerner is still my favorite Michigan fried chicken place (Saugatuck). And yesterday, my parents and I got Buddy's for our New Year's Eve (Day) meal. In normal times (pre-COVID) we usually go out for a New Year's Eve dinner, but like for a senior dinner (like 4:30pm) to beat the crowds. This was my first NYE at home by myself; I couldn't remember what I did last year, but I looked in my Google Calendar and I forgot a friend had a very low-key PJ party that I went to, which was nice.
  3. "Seeing" friends. On Monday, two friends and I had a FB Messenger video call, and those usually last about 2-3 hours since we have a lot on which to catch up. On Sunday, I actually DID see two friends IRL, but we hang out and play board games, and wear masks when not eating (when we eat, we space apart, though).
  4. Binging TV shows. I started watching The Act, on Hulu, which has a pretty crazy (real) backstory, and I'm almost done with that. Also Insatiable, on Netflix, and I'm rewatching Pushing Daisies, on the (free!) CW Seed app. I also was pretty excited to see Servant season 2 and Dickinson season 2 on my press app for AppleTV+; however, because of embargoes, I can't say anything about those just yet. I will say I've been binging Servant s2 this week, though, since I was a huge fan of s1, and I watched one episode of Dickinson s2 so far. Today I was thinking about maybe watching a movie ... possibly Practical Magic (HBO Max, also I have it on DVD) or Hook, which are two of my favorites.
  5. Christmas. Christmas was a muted affair this year. It was weird to have to drive over to my parents' house for it, and then not stay over. We usually open gifts from my aunt but because USPS is so slow this year, only one gift card had made it through. However, I gave my parents a new Lefant robot vacuum, and so I spent a lot of time playing tech support and trying to set that up (TL:DR ... you need to have both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz wifi set up to do it ...). We also did our usual tradition of cooking appetizers, watching a movie (Soul, which I'd give 3.5/5 stars), and then eating our "regular" dinner.
