Movie Review: Sausage Party
Frank (voiced by Seth Rogen) is a hot dog, and he has lived in a case at Shopwell's, a grocery store, his entire life. His girlfriend, Brenda (Kristen Wiig), a hot dog bun, excitedly awaits the day they can be together - when the Gods (aka a human) "chooses" them together - and it's almost Red, White & Blue Day (aka 4th of July) so they're thinking that it will be sometime soon. However, Frank soon learns what actually happens when the food in the store is "chosen," and he and Brenda must warn their fellow grocery-mates about the bleak future that lies ahead for them.
The vocal performances in this movie were mostly recognizable, which was fun. Rogen voices Frank, the main hot dog, and Wiig voices Brenda, the main hot dog bun. There's also James Franco as a druggie human, Paul Rudd as the teenage grocery employee, Michael Cera as Barry the hot dog, Bill Hader as Firewater (a non-perishables item), Salma Hayek as Teresa the taco, whom I identified immediately; Jonah Hill as another hot dog; Danny McBride, Edward Norton as a bagel, and more. The movie even breaks the "4th wall" at the end, which was kind of bizarre and not really necessary.
No, skip this movie. Someone mentioned to me that the film was made for "adolescent grown men," which could be true (I'm not in that age/gender group ...), but I was disappointed with the film after the trailers were so funny. I'll admit I did laugh at a few things throughout, but the movie got less funny as time went on, and unfortunately I can't really recommend it. It gets 2 stars from me instead of 1.5 because it did have a plot, and one that was easy to follow, but it's still not a film I'd recommend to anyone, even "manboys," to see at the theater.
Sausage Party is in theaters today, August 12th, and is rated R with a runtime of 89 minutes. 2 stars out of 5.
