Review: New made-to-order salads at Del Taco {and win a $25 Del Taco gift card!}

*Disclosure: I received a complimentary meal at Del Taco in exchange for this post. The opinions expressed here, however, are my own.

My family and I dined at Del Taco this weekend to try their new salads, which are all under 600 calories. I'm a fan of Del Taco, as there's a location close to me that I sometimes frequent; usually I get the chicken or turkey tacos, so I had never tried any of the new salad dishes before.

The three new "ensaladas" choices include a Chicken Bacon Avocado Salad (590 calories), a Mexican Chopped Chicken Salad (510 calories), which is what my mom and I ordered, and the Signature Taco Salad (540 calories), which is what my dad chose for his meal.

All of the salads come with tortilla chips, hand-sliced avocado, a lettuce blend, and a side dressing - the chicken salad and taco salad come with salsa casera, and the Chicken Bacon Avocado salad comes with a cilantro pepita ranch dressing.

Mexican Chopped Chicken Salad

I am not a big salad-eater in general, but I overall liked this salad. I am a huge fan of pico de gallo, which was included on the top of the salad - it added a little bit of spice to the salad, too - and the tortilla chips were nice and salty, as well. My only complaint is that I wish the salad had more of a "dressing" versus the salsa - I enjoyed dipping my tortilla chips in the salsa, but I generally don't like salsa on salad.

My mom loved the black beans and avocado that came with her salad - she actually lucked out and got double the serving on both, since I gave her mine (I'm sometimes a picky eater, and not a fan of black beans or avocado). She liked her salad too, as did my dad, who got the taco salad (see below).

Taco salad with beef - turkey is an option as well

I was impressed when I found out that turkey was an option as well, for the taco salad - I love Del Taco's turkey tacos, so I might try the taco salad next time but with turkey.

Overall, I enjoyed my salad, and you get a decent-sized portion for the price, too; it's $5.49 for the salad alone, or $7.49 for a salad and drink combo ($6.99 if you choose the taco salad).

Our meals would have been pretty healthy overall, but I had to introduce my parents to the deliciousness that is Del Taco's caramel cheesecake bites too - this was their first time eating at a Del Taco, and they had never had them before. (description of them from Del Taco's website: "Piping hot
bundles of sweet cheesecake and gooey caramel, enveloped in a light crispy shell" - not added: they're super tasty!)

For a limited time, you can also get a coupon for a free small drink with purchase of any of Del Taco's new salads, by going to www.deltaco.com/salads - thanks to Metro Detroit Mommy for the tip!
